Strategies for Attracting Good Employees Part II

attracting good employees

In part one of Attracting Good Employees, I covered the current job market and what companies need to do to attract employees who are looking for a better work environment.

Once you have come up with a strategy and action plan to be better positioned as an employer of choice, the next step is to communicate that to potential employees. This requires some good marketing prose and a place for people to find the information.

I suggest creating a recruitment page on your website where candidates and job seekers can learn about working in your company and about the job opportunities you are offering. You can post links to where people can apply for these jobs, whether it is directly on your site or through a job posting on sites like Indeed and LinkedIn.

On the is page you can get creative with content, such as a description of what you offer as a workplace that addresses why people are looking to leave their current job. I listed these five reasons in my last article and video and even have created a worksheet to help you strategize on how to address these issues in your business. These five reasons why people leave their jobs is based on research by Forrester Research and was presented in a webinar by one of the lead researchers.

Many people have been reflecting on what they want in life and work during the current pandemic and are looking to work for companies that reflect their values. So, expressing your values and beliefs and even the story behind the founding of the business is a great way to attract like minded people. Interviews with the owners and directors would enable people to further resonate with the values, beliefs, and the mission of the company.

You can also populate the recruitment page with photos and videos of your business. This is like an about us page but focused more on employee attraction and marketing yourself as an employer of choice. Adding testimonials from employees along with their photos and video clips would further add to the relevance of the page and your objective.

When researching potential employers’ people are looking at all the information available. They will check your presence on the web on sites like Google My Business, Facebook, LinkedIn and Indeed. Make sure to keep these pages up to date and ask employees to leave reviews. Reviews are a powerful resource for job seekers and whoever shops online knows how influential reviews can be in making decisions. In my next article and video, I will cover how to search for ideal candidates rather than relying on job postings that may have a lot of competition.
